All of the 89 images are now uploaded.

On date to be arranged I will be setting up a temporary studio in Hay-on-Wye with the intention of making some portraits of local people. A contemporary record to sit alongside the images from the 1920s. I hope to exhibit them in that area.

Are you descended from any of the people pictured?

Would you like to take part in the project?

Please get in touch.

I will update this site with news about the progress of the project.

The building that used to house ‘The Crown’  in Hay-on-Wye is now the home of Mr Puzzles Jigsaw World and Teddy Bear Wonderland. I’m guessing that Minnie probably worked there.

I visited Hay-on-Wye today and was fortunate to make some excellent acquaintances. Among them Gail at the Haymakers Gallery and Brent at the Lion Street Gallery were great and very supportive of the project as was Eric Pugh who is a mine of information about the history of the area and has a special interest in the photographer Thomas Moxon whom I believe may be the person who made all of these photographs. Thomas Moxon had his studio at 8, Castle Street, Hay for many years covering the early 20th Century. He died in 1952. Eric told me that he remembered Thomas’s wife throwing out all of Thomas’s glass plates onto a rubbish tip. Some of the young boys went down there to throw stones at all the glass.

So although the majority of his lifetime’s work was lost maybe a few were rescued after they were literally cast away!

I know now that I will work towards securing a space in Hay in order to set-up a temporary studio with the intention of making contemporary portraits that can sit alongside the 1920′s record of the community.

In true Blue Peter style here is one I made earlier …..
